Rekishi, is a Japanese term used by otaku as a general idea for a history buff, particularly at a given time period of interest. Not to be confused with the musician/personality of the same name. Its contemperary usage originated from the term "Rekijo" that appeared in the later 2000's. Rekijo or "History Girls" are empowered, categorized, and labeled a group of people who fit the gender of girl and established an enjoyment of history. It was seen in the west as sexist, so an optional term of "Rekishi" was used as a genderless option as well as a male counter part version the term "Rekihito". Rekishi subculture is a theme of various time periods which are usually in Japanese History, Fictional Time Period Setting Series, Documentaries, Time Period Dramas, and Academic Research. Their motto was: "There is a time when people celebrate the pre-modern past of Japan and all of its rich history and lessons." This had identified those who had an interest in Japanese History, but often got confused as people who had an interest in Japan itself in its many sub interests. Rekijo which had doubled as Animanga Otaku had meetings to talk about doujinshi comics and warring states had discussed a way to redirect others who were confused of history versus Japan itself. The term that had turned up for those seen as Japan Buffs would be a category called "Japanocists" which would be a separate title than "Rekishi" and not as negative as the implications of the title "Japanophile" that was controversial, until the arrival of the "Weeaboo" to take a large amount of negative social stigma of those interested in Japan. TREND SETTING HISTORY GIRLS There is a time when people celebrate the premodern past of Japan and all of its history and lessons, which was started from Rekijo that appeared in the later 2000's. Before the label Rekijo, mostly middle-aged and senior aged people took an interest in history with most of them being male and not many at all female. History wasn't on a lot of peoples idea as a fun thing to learn about and was seen as an old persons hobby that was not very relatable with modern Japan in more ways than one. The society of people were different, the terms of living were different, the challenges of technology were different, and many ideas were not seen from a global market place, which made capturing something enjoyable and easy to communicate was very difficult for teachers, historians, and groups that depend on anything involving historical Japan. During 2006, Maki Fukasawa coined the idea of "Herbivore Men" which was used referring to a man who has lost their ability of "Manliness". In Otaku Culture, the term was used when looking at masculine traits of samurai, warlords, and political figures from historic times, since it was not uncommon for men to look to the past for businesses on the life approach of such figures, management styles, and conflict decision making for corporate business. Media tried to push the idea that Rekijo was simply a woman's fantasy of a masculine male by the selection of preferred traits and caused by the term Herbivore Men, thus creating the only suitable men the ones from history books or from the alternate fictional men or even animanga men. But Rekijo had passed just the initial interest of pop-heritage and moved towards real-heritage as they became more exposed to the history of Japan. While not the main cause of the popularity of Rekijo it didnt mean there wasn't discussions happening of what it would be described as. The media kept on stating Herbivore men described as those who were non-assertive, indifferent attitude to physical touch, have little to no preference in many decisions, and look for romantic relationships that do not have the need to evolve to girl friend or marriage. But what were they to be compared to? which sparked discussions at meetings of Rekijo who had added terms like "Carnivore Male" that are aggressive, persistent towards physical touch, are demanding in specifics, and seek a girlfriend but not as much marriage. And a balanced ideal would be the "Omnivore Male" which was assertive, understanding towards physical touch, have preferences as guidelines, and seek marriage, but are seen as metrosexual. These terms would be used in describing attitudes of man and would also have female ideal counterparts and the same sexist implications of a women losing their "Femininity" from Rekihito that would use similar terms, like: Fruitivore Women, passive aggressive, indifferent attitude to prestige, have a preference in many decisions, and look for romantic relationships that do not have the need to evolve to boy friend or marriage. Piscivore Women. that are aggressive, persistent towards prestige, are controlling in attention, and seek a boyfriend but not as much marriage. and Omnivore Women which was passive, understanding towards physical touch, have preferences as guidelines, and seek marriage, but are seen as cosmosexual. HISTORY OTAKUS PATH & THE SISTERHOOD Celebrating a day about Japan through those interested in Japanese Animation brings awareness to many, but by many people seeing it as a day to celebrate history it makes its own mark from its fictional stance. It was seen by some to celebrate heritage while some also said it would disgrace heritage with fictional flare to spread a false idea of what history really was. However it wouldn't be overlooked that it would be a day celebrated by many non Japanese people and japanese people across the globe, since it was attached to a hobby interest and not ethnic heritage. Critics state that the day violates the struggle that was Japans many wars and disgraces the lost lives of those who lived back then. It was also argued that knowing the country of Japan is always into fads and obsessions that Rekijo and Rekihito take advantage of peoples growing interest into its artistic interpretation to ruin the heritage of Japan while making people forget the ugly side of Japans conflicts. The reactions on the topic were not limited to those uninterested in it, but also by those interested as self proclaimed Historians who would say they had their doubts about where the growth of heritage would take people in their beliefs of non-fictional versus fictional timelines. These points created the term "Pop-Heritage" that would later on spawn "Pop-Spiritualism" and "Pop-Tradition" that were all more attractive in appearance, more contemporary and stylized, and more relatable of an idea which made it more commercially viable. In turn these pop labels had implied that Rikishi Day supported less authentic ideas than is "Real Japan Spiritualism", "Real Japan Heritage", and "Real Japan Tradition". The "Pop" borrowed elements of "Real" and many other styles from the countries past trends, globalization, and evolving interests, were taken into account for the growth in interest, perception, and popularity, that was simply put as good marketing to revive peoples interests through fantasy. Rekishi Food History Since 2008, there had been a movement of people interested in consumption of Japanese traditional, cultural, and old tales as a way to both connect and explore the significance of cultural heritage. This had brought the idea of Rekishi Cuisine as a to contribute to historical areas and long forgotten rural areas that have historical importance in history. This would bring rural areas, old regional cuisine, shinto shrines, buddhist temples, and historical sites as key components to the culinary development of Rekishi food.\ Rekishi food is based on culinary traditions set up by some of the oldest schools for the culinary arts to try and pass on their unique methods of cooking. Some overlap with other Japanese cooking styles and some are a bit more leaning towards a western influence of Rekishoku-style (history style cooking). While the name is history it is a general category that has its influences within the time eras of Pre-Meiji cooking with many dishes having their own story from its timeline influence or timeline recipe extraction. Origins of Rekishishoku in Aichi Prefecture The interest of the cooking style is said to have come from Rekijo who wanted to cook a historic meal similar to that of their experiences visiting Aichi at Meiji-Mura, which was dishes that were well known Yoshoku dishes. Afterwards they would be looking for more authentic time period dishes that are less seen and had needed more attention. Such as the Pie-making taught by the "Akahori Cooking School" that had a rich amount of knowledge of cooking techniques and recipes that acted as a sort of menu guide for practitioners of old style Japanese Western cooking. The reference would be to a book called “Wayo Katei-Ryoriho”, Japanese and Western home cooking that has recipes for dishes such as "Bisuteki Pie", "Toriniku Pie" using matsutake mushrooms, and more. These sort of studies would lead more interest in Historical cuisine and old stories for contents that would be created to appeal to the more modern audiences, but took inspiration from historical dishes, especially if they had previously went out of fashion and popularity. Rekishi Day Description Rekishi Day in the Otaku Culture is celebrated on the 26th of September. It originated from a group of passionate history buffs called Rekijo which roughly translates to History Girl that took a great interest in the Sengoku period and labeled as a type of otaku in the west. The term had gotten a more generalized term in the west "Japanocist" who was to be a specialist on Japan in general. While the day was not limited to the era or Rekijo it was inspired by both to have efforts to retell stories through a romantic lense, contemporary adaptations of looks and etiquette, and full on fictional stories that are loosely based on its actual history to bring back interest in Japan. Resurgence Japanese Culture Resurgence is a movement that is adorned by Japanese history buffs to make the culture even more beautiful and attractive then it already is. This had first come to fruition through the contemporary fictional story of "Sengoku Basara" that made once real appearance unattractive samurai to sexy attractive samurai with even more romantic stories through otaku expression of fanfics and doujinshi. It showed the potential of a romanticized history could bring back interest to real history for a come back to happen to historical sites, historical techniques, historical foods, and historical literature. Celebratory Foods Rekijo who identified themselves as also Animanga Otaku had searched for food to express their passion for their Japan Dramas, Animanga, and Interest in History. This had led to the development of Rekihito Ryori, which is dishes told in old documents or Japanese recipes that are historical and grew out of fashion to have a contemporary techniques and flavors added for variations based on limited ingredients from historical areas. Any of the foods listed as Rekihito Ryori are traditional to Rekishi Day. Globalization and Indigenization As the worlds globalization brings about awareness of multiple cultures it has also brought people a sign of importance of indigenization that makes their local culture even more important. In Otaku culture there are many references to Japan and its history and places, so Rekishi Day marks as a reminder of tradition and its long lasting effects. Trend Setting History Girls and Cool Japan There is a time when people celebrate the premodern past of Japan and all of its history and lessons, which was started from Rekijo that appeared in the later 2000's. Rekijo or "History Girls" are empowered, categorized, and labeled a group of people who fit the gender of girl and established an enjoyment of history. Rekishi Days Foundings by Sengoku Basara Rekijo to Rekihito and then to Rekishi had filled the spectrum of people, but it did not limit their historical interest by any means. Instead of prefectures they would study the areas of "Todofuken", or specialize in a particular era, some of the more popular ones were: Heian Period, Kamakura Period, Muromachi Period, Azuchi-Momoyama Period, Edo Period, and Meiji Period. The study of history, particular warlords, samurai groups, and historical figures before modernization are particularly popular as well This goes further into the foods of the time, study of family crests and historical fashion trends, along with practices of ceremonies and participation in festivals especially those who hold wartime reenactments. All these things allowed the culture to flourish from the Otaku Culture as a gateway to be a Japanocist with series like: Rurouni Kenshin (1994) and Naruto (1997). Elevating interests of Otaku within the Japanocists would lead into overlapping celebration "Sengoku Basara (2005)" called Rikishi Day that is celebrated by Otaku Culture on the 26th of September after the original run of Sengoku Basara ended its first season.. Sengoku Basara is Animanga and draws from Japan History, which meant it was a series both types of hobbyists were eager to enjoy. Rekijo had then entered the world of the Fujoshi with the suggestive undertones like a connection of brotherhood, or shounen ai, or yaoi, within the plot of the series. This would make it important to not just be interested in history it self, but the possibility of fictional plots and beautiful characters which could be portrayed in a inspired by non-fiction or in complete fictional story. History Otakus Path and The Fujoshi The Japan gender idealism controversy would create a black and white or wrong and right idea of gender role ideas but not standards, but would also trigger a discussion for any grey areas which didn't fit the description of the original six -vore type terms that were discussed by Rekijo and Rekihito. These would overlap with character cliches in animanga of the -dere phenomena that had even more types and were scene as hardcore otaku terms with a similar categorizing idea to identify ideal selections of desired types. That created all level of -vores have -dere counterparts for a ever growing list of selected trait composition names. This use of overlap was identified as the common ground and blurring point between those interested in Japan and those primarily interested in Animanga that happened to have elements of old Japan in them. And yet, the merged path had made History loving otaku who were also Fujoshi had turned the blurred world of fiction and non-fiction into a serious interest that has a need to inform people about its differences. While most of those interested in series that have Japan history in it are quite attracted to the characters in the stories they do not dismiss it as fictional tales and pay tribute to real world historical locations and events that celebrate the actual occurrences in the Japan timeline. This action of seriousness to distinguish had led to developments of questions of ancient Japan comparisons to Otaku Culture, like: Tradition Family Crests and the introduction of "Otaku Crests", The Shinto Holy Books and the introduction of "Otahonsho Taku Books", and Sengoku Jidai Castes and the introduction of "Otaku Hobby Classes". Criticism Celebrating a day about Japan through those interested in Japanese Animation brings awareness to many, but by many people seeing it as a day to celebrate history it makes its own mark from its fictional stance.
