Hawaii Color Palette of Paints
Hawaii has a language of colors that are connected to the land in its passage of hues in the art, garments, architecture, and foods. As westernization happened in the islands it influenced the colors and their association especially in art and garments with a much brighter tone that was not as earthy; some of the traditional color meanings are followed and passed down from kupuna, there are. There are many colors which are considered as messages from what flower they come from or ingredient by the Hawaiian people. Certain colors are important to particular islands, hula halau, hui (groups), and their meanings. Traditional Colors of Hawaii The Nation of Hawaii, was a country that was in the midst of westernization and modernization to become at the level of the global world. At the end of the Royal Hawaiian Kingdom modernization continued, but a closer look allowed for a step back into the world of Kanaka Maoli tradition and this would include colors. This would at first be noticed in the crafts of: Hawaiian Feather Art (colors of bird feathers), Hawaiian Kapa Cloth and print (colors of natures bounty), and of course Natures Flowers (colors of flower foliage). Hawaiians believed that different colors had symbolic spiritual power, magical properties, and beautiful appeal. It would be based on the bird in the case of Feather Art and was said to effect; eyesight, endurance, and speed. Plantation Colors of Hawaii The colors tell the story of the people as it reflected from those who were a combination of ancient and modern. The colors of the plantation time were inspired heavily on the traditional colors of Hawaii. They were made to fit with other colors in a wider variety and larger scope, but of a similar tone that Hawaiians used, and has the old colors as a basis. In this sense the story of the people and the industry of the plantations are told through these colors. Those whose descendants now have passed generations of people and even more waves of people. Before the war, these colors payed homage and identified as one people of those who were around as Hawaii Kingdom Nationals. Colors of the time before Statehood still connected to the times before were replaced as the norm. After World War II many of the colors would be replaced with a more American Color Palette of the "Mid Century Modern". This would continue into statehood and Hawaii would move into more contemporary colors and lost part of its history of Plantation colors and traditional Hawaiian colors in the process. Scientific Studies of Hawaii Color Colorcom, Mortan Ohana, and University of Hawaii School of Architecture would go off to do a project known as "The Historical Colors of Hawaii Plantation Housing". This would : survey, research, analyze, and conclude scientifically analyzed colors of paint of plantation homes in camps and historic residential areas. This would be done to make a specification of the color numbers in the current color palette system. 19th Century, residents made their own "linseed-oil paint" for its long lasting, cost effective, and was used by many.
