Hawaii has its fair share of rain its a sign from the clouds above and can be light with a drizzle alongside a rainbow or heavy downpours. In some cases it can bring flooding when there are horrible storms and there are on the opposite side times of great drought especially in certain areas where their greenery marks the signs of rain. In Hawaiian mythology Lono is the Hawaiian god of agriculture and rain.
With being in a tropical area causes unexpected waves of rain that lasts for a little while and will move through the island with a rainbow being left behind. One area maybe completely dry and instantly wet in just moments and some areas near mountains can continue raining for the rest of the day. This means the infrastructure is always in need to find out a way to collect rain water and reuse it. Ho'oilo Wet Season Seasons in Hawaii, have mostly converted over to the global four season calendar. In the Spring time there are many light drizzles that cover the landscape for short periods of time and can be refreshing. In the Summer time there is not much rain and can have large amount of humidity being so close to the ocean. In the Fall rain begins to be seen more often and the closer it gets to Winter the rain begins to be more common. It still separates it into the Hawaiian two seasons. The dry season and the wet season called Ho'oilo. It plays an important part to the farmers who are responsible for feeding Hawaii's populations with water being integral to crops and especially in Hawaii's speciallization in Aquaponics. Seasons are important as a way to keep track of possible heavy winds from Summer to Fall for "Hurricane Season". If a hurricane does hit there are rock falls and mudslides, property and road damage, and danger for residents with flying debris. Keeping track of weater reports are very important, since Hawaii is so small a hurricane could do massive damage to the small set of islands. Rain Forests The Rain Forests (ma'ukele) and Forests (nahele) are connected in Hawaii culturally to the rain as it feeds into the plants, moss, animals, and of course trees. These areas are highly treasured from the Hawaiians as it is seen as great importance of the land since it deals with a great deal of filtration and is directly connected to water that goes into streams. Ancient Hawaiians would depend on the forests to help the water which would go down into the Aquaponic system of Taro (Kalo) which would give nutrients for other edible seafood. Lono and Rain Hawaiians say that the god whose head is hidden in the dark clouds which brings great rain to dry areas is Lono. He is seen to be the one responsible for farming and agriculture and is tied to farmers success. He is also connected to the event of Makahiki where farmers hope for a great amount of care from the god with being provided with great seasonal bounties. Totan Roofs bring a Rain Drops Lullaby When it rained lightly it would be noticeably sweet and as it would get louder the roof would signal the amount by showing how hard it was raining. The rhythm of the falling rain on the tin roofs would have some people drifting off to sleep with its relaxing sound as a rainy lullaby. In the Big island they would call it the "Hilo Lullaby". These were "Tin Roofs" would be constructed with an installation of "Canec" ceiling to lesson the sound. Totan Roofs come from the Pidgin word Totan which combines Japanese and Portuguese to make a word meaning "Galvanized". They were common in the plantation days. Their appearance is that of a "corrugated tin metal roof". The old World War II warehouses had these same roofs and were called Quonset huts that were made using the same "Totan Panels" and were nicknamed "Kamaboko Houses" for their shape being similar to a fishcake. Island Humidity Humidity is water in the air that can be felt immediately as the average percent of humidity in Hawaii is at 70% which increases the feeling of heat, sweat, and wetness, which increases temporarily after rainfall. The humidity for things to feel a sense of normal humidity is at 50%. Engineers work to find out new ways to make uses of humidity or filtering water from humidity that gets captured from man made devices, such as "Dehumidifiers" that use Air Water Technology.
