Flying Saucers
Flying Saucers are a specialty of Kauai festivals and it is predominant at Obon Festivals especially. They are not actual flying saucers of an alien space ship, nor the Frisbee that is being thrown at the beach park, but an encased sandwich with sauce with meat and cheese and butter on the breading. The outer crust is removed and used to make other foods such as bread pudding or bread stuffers. The importance of the flame is to show that the fire has powers to imbue flavor into the dish. A misconception is that flying saucers are confused with Gotenburg Sausage UFO's and some even are so confused they use them interchangeably. However there is a clear difference, even if they are joking around on the same topic of unidentified flying objects as a naming for the dish. While it is unknown of its exact origins of which island started it there are flying saucers found on the island of Maui as well which has its own variations of the dish. The filling that is most known is the classic Hawaii Sloppy Joe Mix which has its own differences like the addition of oyster sauce and shoyu to the recipe. Depending on what part of the island you are at there can be recipes that are found to be quite different when these tasty enclosed sandwiches are made than a sloppy joe. The variations that are the most in contrast would be: Sloppy Joe filling, Spaghetti Sauce filling, Chili Cheese filling, and Stroganoff Cream filling. While the date is not known the basics of the recipe remained the same as an island tradition that stayed true to its beginnings. While Kauai was always known to have a handle of keeping their Flying Saucers for a long time it seemed like those sharing stories in Maui had a more complicated history with the dish. The Traveling Saucer In the 1960s, Plantation and inter-island travel which played an important part of trying to figure out the dishes origins creation and differences on the two islands. It is considered that many who lived on Kauai chose to move to other islands and brought their traditions with them to their obon festivals. While it is correct or not is yet to be found out, but it is one idea can not be dismissed. Many stories involve tradition on the island of Kauai while a key difference with stories on Maui are that they were a dish made to use left overs. Straight from the household of making use of left overs. It helped people eat for less when saving money as well as made use of left over meat balls, meatloaves, and stews, especially if they went well with meat. This can be seen with the fillings of the home that take for a different turn with: Hamburger Curry filling (Hamburger Curry), Ground Beef Stew filling (Hamburger Stew), and ground pork Cream of Mushroom filling (Pork Cream Stew).
