The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, is said to also grunts like a pig, look like a big, and be like a stiched broken snout of a big. Humuhumu means “to fit pieces together.” This probably refers to their pretty blocks of colors which fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. Nukunuku-a-pua’a means “snout like a pig.” The fish makes strange grunting noises when taken out of the water. Therefore, hawaiian people thought its name meant “grunts like a pig.”
It was the little fish with the big name. It was originally designated the official fish of Hawaii in 1985. But due to an expiration it ceased to be the state fish in 1990. And then it was fixed in 2006. It is supposedly one of the manifestations of Kamapua'a the pig god and is said to transform when he enters the sea. The kino lau of the pig god as a earthly manifestation as Lava is a kino lau of pele. All of the Hawaiian dieties have some sort of physical manifestation that is linked. Each has several attributated to them according to Mary Pukui's book "Nana I Ke Kumu".
