Hawaii Core Home-Academies Denied entry and access to an equal education, with Hawaii having DOE teachers over worked and private schools only being able to be afforded by the rich and those who have sacrificed everything for their child there is a financial division amongst the children of Hawaii. I have taught students from the first day to the last day I had gone to college in class to lecture or as an assistant to the professor or in the library as a guide for students to play catch up to a system they were not prepared for. Home Schooling Challenges For those with bigger families or those with minimal funds or even a lack of opportunity to Hawaii's growing financial burdens it seems children are out to teach themselves. This is not right that maybe a few get an education, but once funding runs out or time allows for only a few to learn there are those left out. They opt for homeschooling, but it is not all bad as it can be seen as an opportunity depending on the people involved of course. I personally feel there is much that is desired to help those home schooling, since programs, guides, and books still cost plenty of money! So over the years I have talked to many teachers about their insight and even met with strangers from other states or countries for further insight. I felt overly privileged to go to a private school after assisting those who were in their JR and senior years in public school as I visited and discussed what they had available to them. Those who had fell behind on the learning curve had no way to catch up and would slowly be left behind and those who were already proficient were getting very bored in the existing system. Fictional School Specializations So, I decided to start working from the page Imagine Hawaii to make a collaboration with people all across Hawaii to have a "Home Curriculum" assembled for students to check out on their own or a parent or friend could check out. This is so they may be guided if they don't have an equal opportunity with a bit of interest guided from their own. These interests will be divided amongst a wide range of fictional schools. Each of these schools are actually groups of people I am meeting in the community that are helping me make different curriculum based on different interests, teaching methods, and curricular design. The first of these will be the curriculum of the group making the curriculum for "Kaulani Home Academy". More will be added over time as this first group will be making this as a based for all other specialty fiction schools. Many Students I had were Kanaka Maoli Many of the students I had tutored over the years were from all sorts of backgrounds and races, but non more predominent than Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians). So my first attempt at trying to create a center of learning online would be with a project called "Stories Breath" in which multiple fictional academic institutions will be available. It will directly tackle some Hawaii values that have been taught to me by local teachers, Hawaiian Kupuna, and my own grandfather about values that come from the olden days of "Local" living. Development Values of the Curriculum It will be in english and have many "Local Hawaii Theming" but it will make use of light Hawaiian language (Olelo), Shared collective (Laulima), Local Story Telling and Hawaiian Legend (Mo'olelo) as well as Ka'ao Based Learning (story based learning), and Held Accountability (Pu'uhonua) for practices of what is balanced or right (Pono), Care and Sustainably of the Land (Malama Aina). These will be some of the main ideas that will be the basis of what might lead to something. We currently used Structured Academic Systems Everything is for the industrial revolution that is based on hourly changes and hard to have in home-school academics or learning independently when behind. It is still important for structure though to at least have an idea of every week in a schedule, but maybe it can be more flexible than the hours given at standard schools when done independently. At homes they tend to use Organic Academic Systems that is based on topics and Child-based learning (interest-guided). This can be good if it is balanced and bad if it takes over most decisions as it might create a unrealistic situation of always being in control as a student. This balance will come from: Lesson Plan (structure learning), Family (Ohana Values), Adventure Lesson Plan (experience learning), and Skill Lesson Plan (scholarly concepts and research). Imagine Hawaii Home Academy
Well i am still trying to figure out whats going on with home schooling. I drew a picture that i can put on the lessons so it can feel thematic and shared by others in the community who are trying to do home school or even schooling themselves. Possibly, even other educational institutions may have a look into another perspective of teachings. Research Phase Many who search will start the "Research" portion of their journey. Reading articles, web searches, social media groups, plenty books and articles, which gives options and not direction. It is non-linear and the structure is built, so it depends on the specifics of the person teaching and the person taught. We are not trying to re-invent the wheel here I found out there are Structured Academic Systems that have hourly changes that are difficult without group learning. Organic Academic Systems that is based on topics and Child-based learning (interest-guided). Both however have a basic idea of direction that will recall back to a main Lesson Plan (structure learning), Family (Ohana) Lesson Plan (experience learning), and Skill Lesson Plan (scholarly concepts and research). It may seem like there are so many programs to purchase or so many possibilities of teaching, but there will be overlay. It is hard if their is no experience, and many are not teachers, so teachers tend to have a general idea of where teaching is to be directed for a person. Not surprising as it is their specialty! Built through the Hawaii Lens But i think i am going to get started with some light Hawaiian language (Olelo), Shared collective (Laulima), Local Story Telling and Hawaiian Legend (Mo'olelo), and Held Accountability (Pu'uhonua), Care and Sustainably of the Land (Malama Aina). These will be some of the main ideas that will be the basis of what might lead to something yet unknown. Ka'ao based learning Children are naturally motivated to explore and as teens thrive on these experiences. And as young adults they familiarize themselves with particular ideas. As grown adults naturally are attracted to return to the familiar. A Ka'ao based program builds on this motivation, using story as a context of learning. Ka'ao (fiction) is sort of like embellishment or a fanciful tale or story of fiction that can tell parts of "Mo'olelo" documentation of legends and myth in selected parts. When adding it to learning it changes its context. In this context, people can explore no matter their age, experiment, discover and critically think in a multitude of ways that paves their way in identifying their own learning style through a character walking through a story. A story-based approach involves both child-creativity and teacher-supported role-playing. The teacher encourages peoples learning through the interactions of the characters to replicate some real life scenarios for higher awareness of analytics levels. For example, while a student is entering the program with their character, a teacher can tell different "talk story tales" to pose questions that encourage independent thinking, problem linking, prediction and hypothesizing. The teacher also includes mathematics, science, and literacy, depending on how a story tells its tales. This idea of Ka'ao based learning in itself is a hypothetical in the research phase and is quite experimental. However in similar story based learning as role-playing games it seemingly heightens problem solving and complex literacy comprehension and mathematical speed. Stories Breath overview Stories Breath features a mixture of unfamiliar Hawaiian characters and modern fantasy characters. Nearly all of the entities are some how mentioned from Hawaiian mythology, as well as new characters designed and created for the purpose of the story. The series features locations that are real and both unique to the Hawaiian islands and its native culture, fictional areas from Stories Breath are deeply explored. Students must visit these areas and interact with fictional characters in order to protect them from enemies. Often, sstudent actions in these areas follow closely to the stories featured from real life talk stories with the older generations. As the story goes on there is less focus on the entities and historical figures, instead making small nods and references to Hawaiian culture. Concept Creation The Stories Breath curriculum has a difficulty of keeping the main character the student alive and interesting over multiple subjects is a challenge. Though many of the characters in education subjects are not normally dark and serious, it was a necessary challenge in making them that way for the story, and what this does is create a meaning to a lesson. Their personalities of the student and the characters in the story can shine because they feel as if their own characteristics exist in the story. Though Hawaii is modified with creative freedom in the characters and areas used for the stories, the design tries to stay within the established roles of entities historical figures in the boundaries of the their world events. When deciding which events to include in the curriculum that interacted through the story, the development would take into account areas with characters that would be interesting to younger audiences as well as their teachers. Initially, I have been hesitant to use entities and people who are real and are not designed, because I am learning and quite unfamiliar with the background history in close detail of such people and it will be always open to revisions.
