Osaka Gyudon 大阪牛丼
Gyudon is thin-sliced beef with onions with Warashita Sauce and a bowl of rice. Common add ons are: pickled things (konomono), soft-boiled egg, green onions, simmered onions, mentaiko fish eggs, shirasu tiny fish, grilled salmon, grilled saba mackeral, dried seaweed, natto. The taste changes based on the quality of the beef, part of the beef, difference of sauce, and the freshness of onion or green onion (negi). Gyudon (meat bowl) is apart of Japanese Cuisine where rice is served with thin-sliced beef, simmered onions, and Warashita sauce in a bowl. The Gyudon originated from Kanagawa (Yokohama) Gyunabe Beef Hot Pot and Shikanabe Dear Hot Pot (1862) which was created as a Autumn dish for its colors using, which would lead to Kanto-styles of Sukiyaki. It was easy to eat on the go and would have variations like: Major franchised gyudon (or gyumeshi) restaurants(like Yoshinoya, Matsuya, and Sukiya) source their meet, so they can keep reasonable prices (imported beef from the US or Australia) instead of the domestic beef (Japan). Eikichi Matsuda Japan's Westernization is said to be the taste of Kantō. During this time is when "Warishita Sauce" went mainstream and by (1877) there were many beef nabe shops. The gyudon was termed by Eikichi Matsuda (Yoshinoya Brand, 1899) during the Meiji Era. Shops that sold this in Ueno & Asakusa were nick named (Chubb Turtle) for the bowl looking like a turtle shell. Osaka Prefecture Gyudon The originator of the Gyudon was said to come from the town of Yoshino in Osaka Prefecture and that is where it is theorized the chain of Yoshinoya got the Yoshino in the name as Yoshino Shop. The nick name for Yoshinoya is "yoshigyu" or Yoshino Beef. Appearance in Donburi RS Otaku Cuisine, Shokugeki No Soma, season 1 episode 6 has Donburi featuring Katsudon, Gyudon and a variety of other donburi that are commonly seen in Japan. While it only briefly passes by in the development of the end game Chaliapin Steak Donburi it still catches the eye of those watching, because Gyudon is an easy to make dish at home for meal prep.
